Groundwater age distribution in a highly dynamic coastal aquifer

Tobias Holt et al.

Summary: The study used the H-3-He-3 method to investigate the groundwater age distribution in a coastal aquifer on the North Sea island of Spiekeroog, showing significantly lower ages in the freshwater lens. Simulation results indicate that seawater infiltration and discharge from the freshwater lens disturb the age stratification below the beach.

Adapting HYDRUS-1D to simulate the transport of soil water isotopes with evaporation fractionation

Tiantian Zhou et al.

Summary: Ecohydrological processes are often evaluated through the fate of stable water isotopes, with isotopic fractionation during evaporation being a commonly overlooked issue. By adapting the HYDRUS-1D model to account for evaporation fractionation, accurate simulation results were achieved. A particle tracking algorithm was implemented to calculate soil water transit times and validate the model's results, showing its applicability for investigating isotope transport processes.

Using vadose-zone water stable isotope profiles for assessing groundwater recharge under different climatic conditions

Lamine Boumaiza et al.

Summary: This study estimated groundwater recharge rates under different climate conditions using vadose-zone water stable isotope profiles. The recharge rates for arid, semi-arid, and subhumid sites were determined to be 0.2%, 2.5%, and 18% of total annual precipitation, respectively. The recharge rates at semi-arid and subhumid sites were consistent with previous estimates, while the arid site had a lower recharge rate, indicating challenges in applying the piston displacement method in arid regions.
