Diversification or Collapse of Self-Incompatibility Haplotypes as a Rescue Process

Alexander Harkness et al.

Summary: In angiosperm self-incompatibility systems, extreme allelic polymorphism is maintained by frequency-dependent selection favoring rare alleles. The spread of a new allele faces challenges due to the collaborative non-self-recognition mechanism, but novel pistil function mutations can lead to the spread of new haplotypes. The elimination of existing haplotypes is also possible with the emergence of novel haplotypes under certain conditions.

Non-self recognition-based self-incompatibility can alternatively promote or prevent introgression

Alexander Harkness et al.

Summary: The collaborative non-self recognition system plays a key role in the diversification of S-alleles. In populations connected by migration, those with more unique S-alleles tend to have a competitive advantage, leading to the replacement of resident S-alleles by migrant ones.

Measurements of lethal and nonlethal inbreeding depression inform the de novo domestication of Silphium integrifolium

John H. Price et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals within the improved S. integrifolium population carried an average of slightly less than one lethal allele per gamete. Significant inbreeding depression was observed in at least one family for eight of the 11 measured traits. This suggests that inbreeding depression may be a significant challenge to the domestication of S. integrifolium, reducing overall population fecundity and values for important phenotypes.
