Timing of prior exposure to antibiotics and failure of Helicobacter pylori eradication: a population-based study

Chuan-Guo Guo et al.

Summary: The prior use of antibiotics increases the risk of treatment failure of clarithromycin-containing triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori. However, recent use of certain classes of antibiotics may paradoxically lead to treatment success.

Delay in Retreatment of Helicobacter pylori Infection Increases Risk of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Chuan-Guo Guo et al.

Summary: This retrospective study in Hong Kong found that patients failed by initial H. pylori eradication have an increased risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding compared to patients who responded to the initial therapy, and the risk increased progressively with longer time until retreatment. Therefore, early retreatment within 3 months should be considered to minimize subsequent risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Helicobacter pylori resistance to antibiotics in Europe in 2018 and its relationship to antibiotic consumption in the community

Francis Megraud et al.

Summary: The study confirmed a positive correlation between macrolide and quinolone consumption in the community and corresponding H. pylori resistance in European countries. Therefore, treatment of H. pylori with clarithromycin and levofloxacin should involve susceptibility testing in most European countries before starting the treatment.

Primary and secondary clarithromycin resistance in Helicobacter pylori and mathematical modeling of the role of macrolides

Eva Kocsmar et al.

Summary: Clarithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, is commonly used to treat Helicobacter pylori infection. The study by Kocsmar et al. on clarithromycin resistance and previous macrolide consumption in 4,744 H. pylori-infected patients sheds light on the sources of primary resistant cases and the impact of prior macrolide consumption for non-eradication purposes.

Long-term risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding after Helicobacter pylori eradication: a population-based cohort study

Fang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study found that even after H. pylori eradication therapy, the long-term risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding was still higher than in H. pylori-negative control subjects. The protective effects of eradication therapy in preventing upper GI bleeding appeared to be limited to younger patients and within the first two years after eradication.
