Vocational Outcomes After Traumatic Brain Injury; Prevalence and Risk Factors After 1 Year in a Multivariable Model

Rajiv Singh et al.

Summary: The prevalence of employment status or full-time study after traumatic brain injury and its predictive factors were investigated in a prospective cohort study. The results showed that at 1 year, only 44.9% of individuals returned to full-time work/study, with frequent changes in work status. Lower employment status was associated with greater injury severity, abnormal CT scan, older age, assault, and presence of depression, alcohol intoxication, or psychiatric history. While some associations were identified, further research is needed to explain the majority of the variance.

Acute Effects of Concussion in Youth With Pre-existing Migraines

Douglas P. Terry et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with pre-existing migraines had greater symptom severity and worse cognitive functioning in the memory domain in the first 72 hours after a suspected concussion. They reported more mental fogginess and memory problems compared to controls, and performed worse on verbal and visual memory tasks post-concussion.

Structural and Functional Brain Changes in Migraine

Sait Ashina et al.

Summary: Individuals with migraine exhibit structural and functional changes in the brain, including white matter abnormalities, silent infarct-like lesions, and volumetric changes. Neuroimaging studies have helped characterize these changes, but limitations such as small sample sizes and poorly defined control groups exist.

Photophobia and allodynia in persistent post-traumatic headache are associated with higher disease burden

Melissa M. Cortez et al.

Summary: The study found that a high percentage of persistent post-traumatic headache subjects exhibited both light and tactile sensitivity, which was associated with higher headache frequencies and lower sensitivity thresholds. This suggests that hypersensitivity across multiple modalities may be functionally synergistic and reflect a higher disease burden.

Impact of abuse on migraine-related sensory hypersensitivity symptoms: Results from the American Registry for Migraine Research

Meesha Trivedi et al.

Summary: This study found an association between a history of abuse and migraine-related sensory hypersensitivity symptoms. Patients with abuse history reported more frequent headaches and higher levels of emotional symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, as well as various sensory hypersensitivity symptoms. Abuse was directly linked to sensory hypersensitivity and mediated by anxiety and depression, indicating the need for further research on mechanistic connections between abuse and migraine symptoms.

Personal Factors Associated With Postconcussion Symptoms 3 Months After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Toril Skandsen et al.

Summary: Personal factors play an important role in predicting postconcussion symptoms in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Factors such as work status, preinjury health problems, and gender were found to be predictors of postconcussion symptoms. Intracranial abnormalities on CT scans were also identified as a risk factor for postconcussion symptoms.

Chronic versus episodic migraine: The 15-day threshold does not adequately reflect substantial differences in disability across the full spectrum of headache frequency

Ryotaro Ishii et al.

Summary: The study findings suggest that using a 15 headache day/month threshold to distinguish episodic and chronic migraine does not fully capture the burden of illness or reflect the treatment needs of patients, which has important implications for future refinements in migraine classification.
