Toxic effects, mechanisms, and ecological impacts of harmful algal blooms in China

Tian Yan et al.

Summary: The study highlights the increasing diversity of harmful algal bloom species in China over the last 30 years, with shifts in the main causative species. Apart from toxic effects on fish and shellfish, HABs also have harmful impacts on other marine organisms.

Emerging harmful algal bloom species over the last four decades in China

Haifeng Gu et al.

Summary: The first recorded micro-algae bloom in Chinese coastal waters dates back to 1933, and since 1990, the frequency and intensity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) have increased significantly. Fish-killing HABs, caused by species such as Karenia mikimotoi and Karlodinium digitatum, have become more severe. Other major toxic algal blooms have caused economic losses and occasional human mortality. Due to global climate and marine environment changes, as well as anthropological activities, there is a potential for the emergence of new types of HABs in China in the future.

Mediterranean alien harmful algal blooms: origins and impacts

Christina Marampouti et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Mediterranean Sea, caused by nonnative algal species, have detrimental impacts on the environment and socioeconomic factors. Future research should focus on data mining, legislation updates, and monitoring of the Mediterranean coastlines to prevent or minimize these impacts.

Transcriptome profiling reveals versatile dissolved organic nitrogen utilization, mixotrophy, and N conservation in the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum shikokuense under N deficiency

Hongfei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transcriptomic responses of Prorocentrum shikokuense to nitrogen deficiency, showing that the species copes with low nitrogen by maximizing nitrogen acquisition and reuse while maintaining carbon fixation through various strategies. This remarkable adaptability may confer competitive advantages to P. shikokuense for forming harmful algal blooms in nitrogen-limited environments.

Alkaline phosphatase activity during a phosphate replete dinoflagellate bloom caused by Prorocentrum obtusidens

Xianling Qin et al.

Summary: The study found that the bloom of P. obtusidens occurred in a phosphate replete environment, unlike previous studies, suggesting that APA was regulated by internal P growth demand rather than external P availability. Very high APA was observed during the early-bloom phase, followed by a significant decrease at the peak of the bloom.

Metaproteomics reveals the molecular mechanism underlying bloom maintenance of a marine dinoflagellate under low ambient CO2 and inorganic nutrients

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study compared the metaproteomes of different stages of dinoflagellate cells and found that blooming cells exhibited higher activity and metabolism of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc., with dissolved organic nitrogen playing a crucial role in carbon assimilation.
