Limited iodate reduction in shipboard seawater incubations from the Eastern Tropical North Pacific oxygen deficient zone

D. S. Hardisty et al.

Summary: This study investigated the rates and mechanisms of iodate reduction in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific using a shipboard tracer-incubation method. Results suggest that iodate reduction is limited to the oxycline, indicating restricted rates in the ODZ core with low oxygen concentrations, while incubations in areas with low oxygen levels did not show evidence of iodate reduction.

A meta-analysis of the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion: The SPICEraq database

Mikaela A. Pulsipher et al.

Summary: The Steptoean Positive Isotopic Carbon Excursion (SPICE) is a significant chemostratigraphic feature in the Lower Paleozoic, widely used for global correlation of Upper Cambrian carbonate strata. This study reveals that regional/local conditions influence the expression of the SPICE event in the rock record, highlighting the importance of robust, quantitative measures for comparing and correlating excursions. The research also shows that while the SPICE event is globally significant, factors such as paleolatitude, paleocontinent, water depth, and facies play a role in its stratigraphic expression.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Shugen Liu et al.

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.

Development of carbonate-associated phosphate (CAP) as a proxy for reconstructing ancient ocean phosphate levels

Matthew S. Dodd et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is crucial in oceanic ecosystems over geological timescales, affecting global carbon cycling and redox conditions. Experimental studies have shown that CAP can be used as a tool for reconstructing ancient oceanic phosphate concentrations, providing valuable insights into the ocean's nutrient history.

Paleoenvironments and geochemistry across a continuous Permian-Triassic boundary section at Bukk Mountains, Hungary

M. E. Brookfield et al.

Summary: The Balvany North Permian-Triassic boundary sediments were primarily derived from silica-rich continental sources, with some contributions from other sources, not completely coinciding with the main extinctions. The boundary showed increased aridity and wind abrasion, leading to distinct changes in specific elemental ratios. Lack of consistency in elemental geochemical changes across different regions suggests that chemical changes in the atmosphere and oceans may have been the main drivers of the Permian-Triassic extinctions.

Oldest-known Neoproterozoic carbon isotope excursion: Earlier onset of Neoproterozoic carbon cycle volatility

Zhiyue Zhang et al.

Summary: The Neoproterozoic Era is known for its significant negative carbon isotope excursions, which are linked to major events such as snowball Earth glaciations, ocean-atmosphere oxygenation, and the evolution of animal multicellularity. The identification of the Majiatun anomaly fills a critical gap in early Neoproterozoic carbon isotopes, suggesting the onset of carbon cycle volatility much earlier than previously thought. This discovery implies deeper roots for biogeochemical processes that may have led to late Neoproterozoic snowball glaciation, oxygenation, and biological innovation.
