Long-term ecosystem nitrogen limitation from foliar δ15N data and a land surface model

Silvia Caldararu et al.

Summary: The difficulty lies in assessing nutrient limitation over long periods of time at large scales. Leaf nitrogen content and nitrogen isotope δN-15 have been consistently decreasing in recent decades, indicating a widespread increase in nitrogen limitation according to the model.

Evidence, causes, and consequences of declining nitrogen availability in terrestrial ecosystems

Rachel E. Mason et al.

Summary: The productivity and life-supporting capacity of ecosystems depend on access to reactive nitrogen. However, long-term records show that nitrogen availability is declining in many regions of the world. Global changes, such as elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and rising temperatures, are affecting the balance between ecosystem nitrogen supply and demand. This decline in nitrogen availability is limiting primary productivity and reducing the quality of herbivore diets in many ecosystems. We outline the current state of knowledge about declining nitrogen availability and propose actions to address this emerging challenge.

Spatial patterns of leaf δ13C and δ15N of aquatic macrophytes in the arid zone of northwestern China

Xusheng Gong et al.

Summary: The study found that the δ13C and δ15N values of aquatic macrophytes in the arid zone of northwestern China were relatively enriched compared to terrestrial plants, with submerged plants > floating-leaved plants > emergent plants in terms of average δ13C values. Additionally, δ13C values of foliar were only negatively associated with precipitation, while δ15N values were mainly associated with temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration, indicating that water-related factors determine the δ13C values of macrophytes in the arid zone, and a combination of water and energy factors affect the δ15N values.
