Quantifying Errors in Observationally Based Estimates of Ocean Carbon Sink Variability

Lucas Gloege et al.

Summary: Reducing uncertainty in the global carbon budget requires better quantification of ocean CO2 uptake and its temporal variability. The study demonstrates that a neural-network approach and large ensemble Earth system models can skillfully reconstruct air-sea CO2 fluxes with sufficient data, although challenges remain in accurately capturing regional variations and decadal variability, especially in the Southern Hemisphere and tropical regions.

SeaFlux: harmonization of air-sea CO2 fluxes from surface pCO2 data products using a standardized approach

Amanda R. Fay et al.

Summary: Air-sea flux of carbon dioxide is important for the global carbon cycle and climate system. Estimating the net flux of CO2 across the air-sea interface using surface ocean CO2 observations varies greatly, but SeaFlux ensemble data product aims to harmonize products and provide consistent inputs for flux calculations, adjusting for methodological inconsistencies.

Ocean carbon uptake under aggressive emission mitigation

Sean M. Ridge et al.

Summary: The study highlights the potential reduced efficiency of the ocean carbon sink with decreasing carbon emissions, particularly under high emission scenarios. In the 1.5 degrees C emission mitigation scenario, the decline in efficiency is primarily due to the ocean's reduced capacity to transport anthropogenic carbon from surface to depth.
