Active biogeochemical cycles during the Marinoan global glaciation

Haoran Ma et al.

Summary: The termination of the Marinoan global glaciation led to the diversification of eukaryotes and possibly the occurrence of animals, suggesting a potential linkage between biological evolution and global glaciation. The study on the marine carbon and sulfur biogeochemical cycles during the Nantuo glaciation in South China revealed active biogeochemical cycles, indicating sustained habitability and survivorship in the pan-glacial ocean. The delayed recovery of marine productivity may have imposed environmental stress for millions of years, paving the way for the evolution of animals.

Behaviorof iron isotopes in hydrothermal systems: Beebe and Von Damm vent fields on the Mid-Cayman ultraslow-spreading ridge

Wenhao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the significance of hydrothermal iron inputs to the oceanic Fe inventory and the potential changes in Fe isotopes during mixing of hydrothermal vent fluids and seawater. Results show that the iron isotopic signature of dissolved Fe is mainly controlled by oxidation of Fe(II) and precipitation of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides.

Predominant microbial iron reduction in sediment in early Cambrian sulfidic oceans

Chaochao Xing et al.

Summary: Microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) and microbial iron reduction (MIR) are two major anaerobic metabolic pathways that account for the majority of anaerobic organic matter degradation in modern marine sediments. The early Cambrian ocean might be characterized by extensive MSR in seawater and MIR in sediment porewater, differing from the predominantly MSR in sediment observed in modern sulfidic oceans like the Black Sea.

A rapid rise of seawater δ13C during the deglaciation of the Marinoan Snowball Earth

Ran He et al.

Summary: The Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation was followed by an increase in atmospheric O2 level and the diversification of eukaryotes. Analysis of carbonate carbon isotope data from globally-distributed samples suggests that intensive organic matter production and burial during deglaciation led to an increase in seawater carbon isotopic composition. This postglacial increase in atmospheric O2 level facilitated further diversification of eukaryotes.

Cracking the superheavy pyrite enigma: possible roles of volatile organosulfur compound emission

Xianguo Lang et al.

Summary: The study reveals the mechanism of superheavy pyrite deposition globally during the Neoproterozoic Cryogenian Period, suggesting a potential mechanism for the formation of sulfur-34 enriched seawater and superheavy pyrite, highlighting the importance of VOSC cycling in the sulfur cycle of Proterozoic oceans.

Strong local, not global, controls on marine pyrite sulfur isotopes

V Pasquier et al.

Summary: Understanding the variations in sulfur isotopic composition of sedimentary pyrite is essential due to the crucial role of sulfur biogeochemistry in regulating the Earth's surface oxidation state. Recent research reveals that local depositional conditions significantly impact the delta S-34(pyr) values, challenging the previous interpretation of stratigraphic variations as global biogeochemical cycling changes. The study demonstrates strong local controls on delta S-34(pyr) and calls for a reevaluation of using these variations to infer global changes in Earth's surface environment.

Precipitation of Marinoan cap carbonate from Mn-enriched seawater

Meng Ning et al.

Summary: The rapid diversification of eukaryotes after the Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation suggests a possible link between the extreme icehouse climate and biological evolution. The delayed cap carbonate precipitation post melting of the Marinoan Snowball Earth glaciation indicates suboxic postglacial seawater enriched in Mn2+. Likely due to continuous hydrothermal Mn2+ flux for about 15 million years, the postglacial ocean was enriched in Mn, with potential remobilization of MnO2 from glacial sediments.

Sedimentary pyrite sulfur isotopes track the local dynamics of the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone

Virgil Pasquier et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that variations in sulfur isotope ratios (δS-34(pyr)) in Peruvian margin sediments are influenced by Oxygen Minimum Zone intensification/expansion and organic matter deposition. Higher microbial sulfate reduction rates result in more effective drawdown and S-34-enrichment of residual porewater sulfate and sulfide, which is preserved in pyrite. These findings emphasize the importance of local environmental changes in shaping sulfur isotope ratios.
