G-Protein-Coupled Receptors in Astrocyte-Neuron Communication

Paulo Kofuji et al.

Summary: Astrocytes play key supportive roles in brain function, with the ability to sense and respond to synaptic activity through a wide variety of neurotransmitter transporters and receptors. Activation of astrocytes by synaptically released neurotransmitters leads to the release of gliotransmitters, influencing synaptic regulation.

Astrocytes, Noradrenaline, α1-Adrenoreceptors, and Neuromodulation: Evidence and Unanswered Questions

Jerome Wahis et al.

Summary: Noradrenaline is a key neuromodulator in the CNS, released from varicosities on neuronal efferents and primarily originating from the locus coeruleus. It has complex physiological effects due to the diversity of noradrenergic receptors in the brain, with the main effect being increased arousal state. In addition to neurons, astrocytes also express noradrenaline receptors and may play a role in modulating the effects of noradrenaline on neurons, particularly in enhancing or inhibiting inhibitory transmission.

Differential pial and penetrating arterial responses examined by optogenetic activation of astrocytes and neurons

Nao Hatakeyama et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different types of brain cells on cerebrovascular responses using optogenetics in the cortex of mice. It found that astrocytes and neurons induced different patterns of cerebral blood flow increase when activated, with the former causing a widespread increase and the latter causing a localized increase.
