Fluid-CO2 injection impact in a geothermal reservoir: Evaluation with 3-D reactive transport modeling

Selcuk Erol et al.

Summary: Geothermal energy is considered environmentally friendly, but geothermal fluids often contain high CO2 content which can be mitigated by re-injecting and mineralizing the captured CO2 underground. A 3D reactive transport modeling study was conducted in a geothermal field in western Turkey to evaluate the geochemical interactions and mineralization process under different scenarios with varying injection rates. The results showed stable CO2-charged fluid mixtures and limited mineralization due to differences in mineral content and CO2 mass fraction between the injected fluid and the reservoir, as well as the impact of temperature, pH, and convective dispersive fluxes. Comparisons with the CarbFix project in Icelandic geothermal reservoirs also showed differences in the mineralization process.

Dispersion and recovery of solutes and heat under cyclic radial advection

D. W. S. Tang et al.

Summary: "The study shows that the recovery efficiency increases with increasing injection-extraction flow rates and decreasing dispersion. In three-dimensional flow fields, the recovery may vary non-monotonically with cycle period due to competition between diffusion and mechanical dispersion."

Evaluating anisotropy ratio of thermal dispersivity affecting geometry of plumes generated by aquifer thermal use

Byeong-Hak Park et al.

Summary: Studies on shallow geothermal applications have shown that mechanical thermal dispersion is a crucial heat transport mechanism in saturated porous media. The validity of the assumption that the transverse dispersivity is one-tenth of the longitudinal dispersivity was investigated, revealing that the dispersivity ratio can vary depending on porous media properties. The thermal dispersivity ratio has a significant impact on temperature plumes developed from the thermal use of shallow aquifers, especially under steady-state conditions.

A two-dimensional analytical model for contaminant transport in a finite domain subjected to multiple arbitrary time-dependent point injection sources

Xiang-Hong Ding et al.

Summary: This study establishes a two-dimensional analytical model for contaminant transport involving multiple arbitrary time-dependent point sources. The results show that assuming multiple sources as an equivalent-intensity single point source would significantly undervalue the polluted range in the early stage, while spacing between sources larger than 1 meter would lead to an overestimation of the maximum downstream concentration.
