Coupled Poroelastic Modeling of Hydraulic Fracturing-Induced Seismicity: Implications for Understanding the Post Shut-In ML 2.9 Earthquake at the Preston New Road, UK

Wenzhuo Cao et al.

Summary: This study simulated and analyzed the earthquakes induced by hydraulic fracturing operations in the Preston New Road, UK using a 3D fully coupled poroelastic model. The results showed that the increased pore pressure plays a dominant role in triggering fault slippage, and the post shut-in pore pressure diffusion is the most likely mechanism.

Laboratory experiments on fault behavior towards better understanding of injection-induced seismicity in geoenergy systems

Yinlin Ji et al.

Summary: Induced seismicity from fluid injection into underground formations poses a threat to sustainable utilization of the subsurface. Laboratory experiments have played a crucial role in understanding the fault behavior related to injection-induced seismicity. This review provides an overview of the current understanding of injection-induced seismicity from the laboratory perspective. It covers the basics of fault behavior, laboratory methods, and the effects of various factors on fault behavior, with a focus on implications for injection-induced seismicity. The review highlights the advancements made in understanding the role of fault properties, stress state, fluid physics, and injection protocol in injection-induced seismicity. However, there are still unresolved questions that could be addressed in future experimental studies.

Competition between cooling contraction and fluid overpressure on aperture evolution in a geothermal system

Fangchao Kang et al.

Summary: Comprehensive understanding of aperture evolution in HDR fracture is crucial for improving permeability in a geothermal system. Through coupled hydro-mechanical and thermohydro-mechanical simulations, we find that the competition between cooling contraction and fluid overpressure determines the fracture aperture, while factors such as fracture geometry, reservoir properties, and injection settings also play significant roles.

Geochemically induced shear slip in artificially fractured dolomite- and clay-cemented sandstone

Samantha J. Fuchs et al.

Summary: The study found that acidic brine has a greater impact on fracture displacement compared to reservoir-simulated brine. Acidic brine results in rougher fracture surfaces and lower fracture toughness. This suggests that acidic brine from geological carbon sequestration could dissolve sandstone cements and increase shear slip at fracture interfaces.

Characterizing fluid flow paths in the Hellisheidi geothermal field using detailed fault mapping and stress-dependent permeability

Pedram Mahzari et al.

Summary: This study used a fully coupled hydro-thermo-mechanical numerical model to investigate the impacts of re-injection of geothermal fluids and CO2 on fluid flow paths in the Hellisheidi geothermal field. Results showed that faults and their connections played a crucial role in fluid transport, with a sweet spot for sustainable flow and heat extraction near faults intercepting geological layers at a depth of 1100 m. Incorporating geomechanical calculations in tracer test history matching could change arrival times and peak profiles, highlighting the importance of stress-dependent permeability in predicting fluid flow paths and processes in the reservoir.
