Modeling of Diffuse Auroral Emission at Mars: Contribution of MeV Protons

Yuki Nakamura et al.

Summary: By using a Monte Carlo model and the electron and proton fluxes observed by MAVEN, we have successfully studied the origin and formation process of diffuse aurora on Mars. The results show that energetic electrons and protons both contribute to the observed diffuse aurora.

Cross-Shock Electrostatic Potentials at Mars Inferred From MAVEN Measurements

Shaosui Xu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the peak of the cross-shock potential profile at Mars and its variation with solar zenith angle and magnetic latitudes. It is found that the shock potential does not significantly depend on certain parameters, but shows correlations with factors like the magnetosonic Mach number and magnetic amplification ratio.

Global Ambipolar Potentials and Electric Fields at Mars Inferred From MAVEN Observations

Shaosui Xu et al.

Summary: This study utilizes data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission to derive electrostatic potentials and electric fields above Mars' collisional atmosphere. The results show significant variations in averaged potentials and electric fields in different regions, with good agreement between data-derived electric fields and the multi-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. The work provides the first data-based characterization of global ambipolar electric fields at Mars.

MAVEN Observations of Low Frequency Steepened Magnetosonic Waves and Associated Heating of the Martian Nightside Ionosphere

C. M. Fowler et al.

Summary: This study presents observations of steepened fast magnetosonic waves in the Martian magnetosphere and ionosphere, discussing the heating effects on light and heavy planetary ions due to wave-particle interactions. It suggests that wave-heating events may be important drivers of Mars nightside ionospheric dynamics and energy budget.

Discrete Aurora on Mars: Insights Into Their Distribution and Activity From MAVEN/IUVS Observations

N. M. Schneider et al.

Summary: MAVEN's Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph has identified 278 discrete aurora events on Mars, with the brightest and most frequent occurrences located around strong crustal fields in the southern hemisphere. These events primarily occur in the evening and are influenced by favorable orientations of the interplanetary magnetic field, lasting for hours each night and potentially visible to future astronauts.
