Crustal Thickening of the Northern Central Andean Plateau Inferred From Trace Elements in Zircon

Kurt E. Sundell et al.

Summary: Research on the northern Central Andean Plateau suggests a long-term crustal thickening since the Late Cretaceous, with significant increases in crustal thickness occurring at 80-55 million years ago and from 35 million years ago to present, coinciding with high-flux magmatism. During an intermediate period, decreased magmatic activity due to shallow subduction obscured the magmatic record, but crustal thickening continued via crustal shortening.

Basin evolution in response to flat-slab subduction in the Altiplano

Brook Runyon et al.

Summary: This paper assesses models for basin formation in the Altiplano and provides a coherent model of the effects of flat-slab subduction on basin formation based on magnetostratigraphy, palynology, and geochronology data.

Tectonic segmentation across Patagonia controlled by the subduction of oceanic fracture zones

Dario Leandro Orts et al.

Summary: Fracture zones left by transform faults segmenting the Chile Ridge have been subducting beneath western Patagonia for the past 18 million years. The subduction direction of these fracture zones has remained stable, impacting seismic activity and crustal structure, controlling the segmented nature of the upper plate. Through analyses of topography, seismicity, gravity, and magnetic anomalies, ENE structural trends across the continental crust related to the mechanical behavior of the plate interface have been identified in the Patagonian region.

Geodynamic models of short-lived, long-lived and periodic flat slab subduction

W. P. Schellart et al.

Summary: In this study, buoyancy-driven numerical geodynamic models were used to investigate the formation and evolution of flat slab subduction. The research found that flat slab subduction can occur without external forcing and that the duration of flat slab subduction is controlled by the strength of the overriding plate. Additionally, three modes of flat slab subduction were identified under different model parameter combinations, offering a potential explanation for the termination of flat slab subduction.

Detrital zircon record of Phanerozoic magmatism in the southern Central Andes

T. N. Capaldi et al.

Summary: The study of spatial and temporal distribution of arc magmatism and associated isotopic variations in the western margin of South America provides insights into the Phanerozoic history of the region during key shifts in plate interactions. The integration of detrital zircon U-Th-Pb and Hf isotopic results across continental magmatic arc systems reveals isotopic signatures linked to changes in continental margin processes. Key tectonic phases including terrane accretion, subduction initiation, extensional collapse, and flat slab subduction are identified through the record of magmatic activity, showing spatial trends in magma composition associated with terrane boundaries.
