Comparison on two case-based reasoning strategies of automatically selecting terrain covariates for digital soil mapping

Peng Liang et al.

Summary: This study fills the knowledge gap in automatic selection of terrain covariates by comparing two representative methods for each case-based reasoning strategy. The experiment, conducted on 191 cases and 38 terrain covariates, concluded that the random forests method adopting the covariate-classification strategy performed the best.

Developing pedotransfer functions to harmonize extractable soil phosphorus content measured with different methods: A case study across the mainland of France

Bifeng Hu et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for living organisms and ecosystems, and accurate information on extractable soil P is crucial for agricultural management and environmental quality. Statistical methods such as partial least squares regression can be used to develop pedotransfer functions for estimating extractable P in soil, with different prediction models observed for calcareous and acidic soils.

Legacy data-based national-scale digital mapping of key soil properties in India

Nagarjuna N. Reddy et al.

Summary: Mapping soil resources at a national scale in large countries like India is challenging due to limited soil data availability. This study produced digital maps of key soil properties across India using legacy data. The relationships between soil properties, bioclimatic factors, and terrain attributes were quantified, providing valuable information for soil management planning.

Babak Kasraei et al.

Summary: This study integrates machine learning-based digital soil mapping with quantile regression to estimate uncertainty in soil predictions. Testing the framework in two case study areas in Canada showed that regardless of the machine learning approach or predicted soil variable, the uncertainty estimates were reliable and stable.

Evaluating validation strategies on the performance of soil property prediction from regional to continental spectral data

Songchao Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the impact of two validation strategies on model performance at different scales, suggesting one-time random sampling or k-fold cross validation for large datasets and k-fold cross validation and/or repeated random sampling for small datasets would be more robust for spectral predictive model evaluation.

Digital mapping of the soil thickness of loess deposits over a calcareous bedrock in central France

Songchao Chen et al.

Summary: The study tested the prediction of loess thickness (TOL) by coupling a large soil dataset and environmental covariates. Using recursive feature elimination for variable selection and quantile regression forests for spatial modeling, the models showed good performance with reasonable prediction uncertainty. Airborne gamma-ray radiometric data and Sentinel 2 products were identified as important variables for the prediction of TOL.

Improving the spatial prediction of soil salinity in arid regions using wavelet transformation and support vector regression models

Ruhollah Taghizadeh-Mehrjardi et al.

Summary: Using machine learning and digital soil mapping methods, this study predicted and mapped soil salinity in central Iran, with W-SVR performing better in predicting salinity across six depth increments. Topographic derivatives were most relevant for lower soil depth increments, while remote sensing covariates were most relevant for topsoil salinity. Uncertainty analysis showed that W-SVR had higher performance compared to SVR in all depth increments.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of understanding spatiotemporal changes in soil conditions for food production, environmental sustainability, and climate change adaptation. The INLA-SPDE model shows promise in accurately predicting soil properties and accounting for uncertainties in spatiotemporal soil modeling. The study recommends the use of INLA-SPDE within a hierarchical model as an effective method in studying spatiotemporal soil change.

Feasibility of the 4 per 1000 aspirational target for soil carbon: A case study for France

Manuel P. Martin et al.

Summary: Increasing soil organic carbon stocks is a promising way to mitigate atmospheric CO2 concentration. In mainland France, achieving a 4 parts per thousand increase in SOC stocks per year for 30 years would require a 30%-40% increase in C inputs to soil. Priorities should focus on increasing NPP returns in unsaturated cropland soils with below target carbon balance and preserving SOC stocks in other land uses. Future data from soil monitoring networks will be crucial in validating these results.

Summary: In this study, satellite sensors (Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3) were used with machine learning techniques to predict soil organic carbon content and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in Switzerland. Results showed that models based on Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 performed better in predicting SOC content, while Sentinel-3 performed better in predicting C:N ratio at coarse resolutions. The study also highlighted the importance of remote sensing variables in soil prediction models of various scales.

Summary: The study introduces a new method to convert field-measured soil texture categories into quantitative estimates of clay, silt, and sand fractions, with a focus on updating Australian national soil coverages. Through machine learning, the approach predicts soil texture fractions at different depths and addresses uncertainties in the conversion process. The results show improvements in predictive accuracy compared to existing mapping products, highlighting the importance of continually revisiting and updating digital soil maps with evolving methods and efficiencies.
