Biodiversity of key-stone phylotypes determines crop production in a 4-decade fertilization experiment

Kunkun Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the importance of soil biodiversity in maintaining soil functioning and crop production, finding strong positive associations between key-stone taxa, soil functional genes, and wheat production. The key-stone phylotypes were also linked to plant growth and essential functional genes related to nutrient cycling.

Environmental stress destabilizes microbial networks

Damian J. Hernandez et al.

Summary: Research shows that natural microbiomes under persistent stress exhibit characteristics of instability, with declines in microbial diversity and changes in network properties of stable communities. Pathogenic taxa decrease while oligotrophs and mutualists increase along stress gradients, impacting the negative:positive cohesion and potentially destabilizing microbiomes and their ecosystem services.

Long-term throughfall exclusion decreases soil organic phosphorus associated with reduced plant roots and soil microbial biomass in a subtropical forest

Yuexin Fan et al.

Summary: Long-term droughts can significantly reduce the availability of phosphorus and organic phosphorus in subtropical forest soils, affecting microbial biomass and fine root biomass. The decline in microbial biomass phosphorus and fine root biomass phosphorus primarily contributes to the reductions of soluble phosphorus and organic phosphorus in soil.

Stochastic processes drive bacterial and fungal community assembly in sustainable intensive agricultural soils of Shanghai, China

Shuangxi Li et al.

Summary: The study found that soil pH was the most important factor determining the structure of bacterial and fungal communities in sustainable intensive agricultural soils in the suburbs of Shanghai. Soil organic matter was positively correlated with fungal alpha-diversity, suggesting efficient use of carbon substrates in these systems. Both bacterial and fungal communities exhibited distance-decay patterns, with bacterial turnover rate faster than that of fungi, and variation in communities attributed to environmental variables and spatial factors.

The microbial network property as a bio-indicator of antibiotic transmission in the environment

Qun Gao et al.

Summary: By analyzing bacterial networks and functional networks, this study found that as antibiotic concentrations decreased, both bacterial and functional networks increased in size, but bacterial networks became less clustered while functional networks became more clustered, indicating a transition from deterministic processes to stochastic processes in bacterial communities at intermediate antibiotic concentrations.

Microbial communities in crop phyllosphere and root endosphere are more resistant than soil microbiota to fertilization

Anqi Sun et al.

Summary: Fertilization significantly influences the diversity and composition of sorghum-associated microbial communities, particularly in rhizosphere and bulk soil microbiomes. Specific genera of bacteria and fungi are important predictors of sorghum yield and protein content. Fertilization has a positive indirect effect on sorghum yield and protein content through influencing microbial diversity in soil microbiota.

Specialized metabolic functions of keystone taxa sustain soil microbiome stability

Weibing Xun et al.

Summary: The study revealed that bacterial communities with higher phylogenetic diversity tend to be more stable, indicating that microbiomes with higher biodiversity are more resilient to disturbances. Functional gene co-occurrence network and machine learning classification analyses identified specialized metabolic functions, especially nitrogen metabolism and phosphonate and phosphinate metabolism, as key functions. Further taxonomic annotation revealed that these key functions are carried out by specific bacterial taxa, including Nitrospira and Gemmatimonas.
