Trace Element Biogeochemistry in the High-Latitude North Atlantic Ocean: Seasonal Variations and Volcanic Inputs

Eric P. Achterberg et al.

Summary: This study presents dissolved and total dissolvable trace elements data from spring and summer cruises in 2010 in the high-latitude North Atlantic, assessing the impacts of biological uptake and volcanic inputs on element concentrations. The results show that deep winter mixing is a dominant source of elements, with atmospheric inputs being important for certain elements. Deep mixing dominating nutrient and trace element supply to surface waters may have consequences for primary production and the biological carbon pump in this region, especially if water column stratification increases as predicted.

Decoupling of particles and dissolved iron downstream of Greenlandic glacier outflows

C. M. van Genuchten et al.

Summary: Glaciers can serve as a significant source of iron in high latitude coastal seas, with dissolved iron concentrations remaining relatively constant despite variations in particulate iron content. The study suggests that the inert nature of glacier-derived iron phases contributes to the buffering of dissolved iron concentrations in these coastal waters.

Diagenetic formation of uranium-silica polymers in lake sediments over 3,300 years

Pierre Lefebvre et al.

Summary: The study investigates the evolution of uranium speciation in naturally highly uranium-enriched sediments over a period of 3,300 years. It reveals that mononuclear U(IV) species associated with organic matter transformed into polymeric U(IV)-silica species, which then partially converted to a nanocrystalline coffinite-like phase in less than 700 years. The incomplete transformation observed suggests implications for the long-term management of uranium-contaminated sediments and uranium-bearing wastes in silica-rich subsurface environments.

Manganese co-limitation of phytoplankton growth and major nutrient drawdown in the Southern Ocean

Thomas J. Browning et al.

Summary: The text discusses the issue of residual nutrients in the Southern Ocean, emphasizing the importance of manganese in influencing the marine ecosystem and nutrient cycling. Experimental results show that manganese plays a key role in controlling phytoplankton growth, particularly in the central Drake Passage.

Increased variability in Greenland Ice Sheet runoff from satellite observations

Thomas Slater et al.

Summary: Runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet has increased in recent decades, affecting global sea level, regional ocean circulation, and coastal marine ecosystems. Direct measurements using CryoSat-2 satellite altimetry show that runoff was 21% higher between 2011 and 2020 compared to the previous three decades, with a 60% increase in variability from year to year.

Trace Element (Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) Dynamics Across the Salinity Gradient in Arctic and Antarctic Glacier Fjords

Jana Krause et al.

Summary: Around the Greenlandic and Antarctic coastlines, sediment plumes from glaciers are significant sources of lithogenic material to the ocean. The distribution of dissolved trace metals in glacier fjords is influenced by various factors including freshwater concentrations, local geology, drawdown by scavenging and primary production, saline inflow, and sediment dynamics.

Summary: The study reveals that the concentrations of dissolved and particulate manganese in the Southern Ocean are generally low, with surface dissolved manganese concentrations potentially limiting phytoplankton growth in the region. Localized higher dissolved manganese concentrations may originate from external sources.

The 79°N Glacier cavity modulates subglacial iron export to the NE Greenland Shelf

Stephan Krisch et al.

Summary: Approximately half of the freshwater discharged from the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets enters the ocean subsurface, where it experiences prolonged residence times in large cavities beneath floating ice tongues. The subglacial dissolved Fe export from Nioghalvfjerdsbrae is decoupled from particulate inputs, likely due to the prolonged residence time of Atlantic water beneath Greenland's largest floating ice-tongue. These findings suggest that the overturning rate and particle-dissolved phase exchanges in ice cavities play a dominant role in controlling subglacial nutrient supply to shelf regions.

Co-seismic eruption and intermittent turbulence of a subglacial discharge plume revealed by continuous subsurface observations in Greenland

Evgeny A. Podolskiy et al.

Summary: Observations on the calving front of a Greenlandic glacier revealed the chaotic and irregular dynamics of a subglacial discharge plume, including intense fluctuations in physical properties of water, tide-modulated changes, and upwelling pulses of warm water. This study provides new insights into the time-variable dynamics of plumes in the Arctic.
