The performance of outgroup-free rooting under evolutionary radiations

Alessandra P. Lamarca et al.

Summary: Tree rooting is crucial for inferring ancestral-descendant relationships between branches in phylogenies. This study analyzed two outgroup-free rooting methods and found that the methods performed poorly in topologies with fast evolutionary radiations and short internal branches. The balance of the tree also significantly influenced the methods' performance.

Eukaryogenesis and oxygen in Earth history

Daniel B. Mills et al.

Summary: The origin of mitochondria and the oxygenation of Earth have been found to be decoupled by recent research. The authors review the literature and conclude that eukaryogenesis and the rise of oxygen were separate events, and that obligate aerobiosis in eukaryotes only became widespread in the past 1 billion years.

The origin of symbiogenesis: An annotated English translation of Mereschkowsky's 1910 paper on the theory of two plasma lineages

Klaus V. Kowallik et al.

Summary: In 1910, Russian biologist Konstantin Sergejewitch Mereschkowsky published a theory about the origin of life and nucleated cells, positing that all life forms descend from two fundamentally distinct organismal lineages. He proposed that thermophilic autotrophs were ancient and placed the phylogenetic root among bacteria lacking chlorophyll. Through endosymbiosis, ancestral mesophilic anucleate heterotrophs were inferred to have evolved into diverse organisms.

Summary: Metagenomic studies allow exploration of microbial diversity in different habitats, but issues with data quality and analytical procedures may lead to the presence of chimeric genomes, raising questions about the naturalness of these genome-like constructs.

Gene Duplications Trace Mitochondria to the Onset of Eukaryote Complexity

Fernando D. K. Tria et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the majority of gene duplications in the last eukaryote common ancestor (LECA) were derived from mitochondria, pointing to the bacterial genes in eukaryotes primarily stemming from serial copying from the mitochondria to the archaeal host chromosomes, followed by vertical gene evolution and differential loss across eukaryotic lineages.

Evidence for a Syncytial Origin of Eukaryotes from Ancestral State Reconstruction

Josip Skejo et al.

Summary: Modern accounts of eukaryogenesis propose an endosymbiotic relationship between an archaeal host and a proteobacterial endosymbiont, giving rise to a unicellular organism with a single nucleus and mitochondria. However, recent research suggests that the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA) may have been multinucleate. The relationships among nuclei and mitochondria within a syncytium were many-to-many, with mitonuclear interactions and cytonuclear compatibility playing a crucial role in the evolutionary origin of eukaryotic cells.
