Insulin receptor deficiency reduces lipid synthesis and reproductive function in the insect Rhodnius prolixus

Gleidson Silva-Oliveira et al.

Summary: Rhodnius prolixus, a vector of Chagas disease, relies on insulin receptor for regulating nutrient metabolism and egg production after a blood meal. Knockdown of RhoprIR leads to increased longevity, reduced lipid storage, smaller ovaries, decreased oviposition, and alterations in gene expression related to lipid metabolism. These findings highlight the critical role of insulin receptor in nutrient homeostasis and reproduction in blood-fed adult females.

Regulation of a Trehalose-Specific Facilitated Transporter (TRET) by Insulin and Adipokinetic Hormone in Rhodnius prolixus, a Vector of Chagas Disease

Jimena Leyria et al.

Summary: Using the blood-sucking kissing bug Rhodnius prolixus as a model, this study investigated the involvement of insulin-like peptides (ILPs) and adipokinetic hormone (AKH) signaling in carbohydrate metabolism, particularly focusing on the regulation of the trehalose-specific facilitated transporter (Rhopr-TRET) in the ovaries. The results suggest a direct trehalose uptake by ovaries, regulated by ILP and/or AKH signaling, and show the cooperative role of Rhopr-TRET with AKH signaling in the release of trehalose during unfed conditions. Overall, trehalose metabolism and its hormonal regulation play crucial roles in adapting to different nutritional conditions and physiological states in female R. prolixus.

Summary: Rhodnius prolixus, a blood-feeding insect, rapidly digests 50% of its blood meal through diuresis after feeding. Malpighian tubules play a critical role in diuresis and are regulated by the neuroendocrine system.
