Pathogenic fungi of marine animals: A taxonomic perspective

Ka-Lai Pang et al.

Summary: Fungal diseases in marine animals are primarily caused by Microsporidia, followed by Ascomycota, while Basidiomycota are mainly known for causing respiratory diseases in marine mammals. With the intensification of aquaculture practices, global warming, and marine pollution, outbreaks of fungal diseases in marine animals may increase.

Culturable fungi associated with the marine shallow-water hydrothermal vent crab Xenograpsus testudinatus at Kueishan Island, Taiwan

Ami Shaumi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the culturable diversity of fungi on the carapace of Xenograpsus testudinatus, a marine shallow-water hydrothermal vent crab. A total of 12 fungal species were isolated, with Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Candida being the most dominant genera. While most of these fungi are typical terrestrial taxa, none have been reported as pathogens of crabs. Further research is needed to determine if X. testudinatus is a vehicle for marine fungal diseases.
