Effects of AAEMs on formation of heavy components in bio-oil during pyrolysis at various temperatures and heating rates

Zhe Xiong et al.

Summary: The alkali/alkaline earth metal species (AAEMs) in biomass significantly affect the formation of heavy components in bio-oil during pyrolysis, promoting the breakage of active oxygen-containing functional groups. The catalytic effects of K and Ca differ, with K showing a stronger decomposition effect on large molecular weight compounds in heavy components compared to Ca.

Fundamentals and applications of char in biomass tar reforming

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the focus of research has shifted towards producing value-added chemicals from biomass through gasification into syngas for further conversion into various products. Heterogeneous catalyst design plays a crucial role in reducing tar formation during biomass gasification, with char and char-supported catalysts emerging as effective alternatives due to their chemical inertness, cost-effectiveness, and excellent pore structures. The modification and functionalization of char through doping and metal addition show potential for enhancing the activity of these catalysts in tar reforming, highlighting the importance of sustainable fuel development and green practices.

Temporal and spatial evolution of biochar chemical structure during biomass pellet pyrolysis from the insights of micro-Raman spectroscopy

Yuanjing Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed two stages of pellet pyrolysis: the decomposition of raw biomass and the condensation reactions of aromatic ring systems. The axial and radial heterogeneity of char chemical structure is mainly caused by heat transfer during uniform heating of the whole pellet, while mass transfer can eliminate this heterogeneity through volatile-char interaction. The combined effects of heat and mass transfer lead to a heterogeneity in pellet char chemical structure.
