Experimental investigation of reactivity controlled compression ignition with n-butanol/n-heptane in a heavy-duty diesel engine

Jinlin Han et al.

Summary: This research investigates the reactivity controlled compression ignition combustion of n-butanol and n-heptane in a single cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine. The results show that the double direct injection strategy can properly phase combustion and achieve high thermal efficiency, especially in low to medium load conditions. Furthermore, high exhaust gas recirculation rates are necessary for proper control of combustion phasing. Extremely low particulate matter and NOx emissions were observed across the tested load range, with a gross indicated efficiency exceeding 50% from low to medium load.

Comparative investigation of ignition behavior of butanol isomers using constant volume combustion chamber under diesel-engine like conditions

Jinlin Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combustion characteristics of three butanol isomers blended with diesel, focusing on the impact of blend ratio, chamber temperature, and chamber pressure on ignition delay and combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay decreased at high temperature and low butanol blend ratios regardless of the isomer type. However, the different butanol isomers showed varying low temperature heat release and high temperature heat release behaviors in the blends with diesel, with tert-butanol/diesel blends exhibiting the fastest low temperature heat release. Ultimately, the study suggests that the low reactivity of butanol could be beneficial for reducing soot emissions in diesel engines.

A comparative study of combustion and emission characteristics of dual-fuel engine fueled with diesel/methanol and diesel-polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether blend/methanol

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative study on the combustion characteristics and performances of a dual-fuel engine fueled with different fuels, revealing that using P50/methanol fuel can increase peak cylinder pressure, decrease first peak heat release rate, and reduce ignition delay and combustion duration. Additionally, the NOx emissions and particulate matter produced by the P50/methanol engine were lower than those produced by the diesel/methanol engine for specific MSR and engine load conditions.

An optical study on spray and combustion characteristics of ternary hydrogenated catalytic biodiesel/methanol/n-octanol blends; part n: Liquid length and in-flame soot

Tiemin Xuan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the spray and flame characteristics of methanol and HCB blended fuels, showing an increase in liquid length with higher methanol content and a decrease in in-flame soot production with additional methanol due to leaner fuel combustion and higher oxygen content within the blends.
