Asphaltene precipitation and deposition: A critical review

Isah Mohammed et al.

Summary: The deposition of asphaltene in reservoirs and pipelines leads to serious flow assurance challenges with significant economic implications. Various preventive and corrective measures have been proposed, but the discussion on the best model and cost-effective prevention strategy is ongoing.

Pore-scale imaging of asphaltene-induced pore clogging in carbonate rocks

Qingyang Lin et al.

Summary: This experimental methodology combines core flooding experiments with X-ray micro-CT to visualize asphaltene precipitation in the pore space of rocks and assess the reduction in permeability. The study found that precipitated asphaltene occupied 39.1% of the pore volume and caused a 29-fold reduction in permeability. Furthermore, numerical analysis of the flow field showed that after precipitation, the flow was confined to narrow channels in the pore space, with good agreement between simulated and measured permeability.

X-ray tomography imaging of shale microstructures: A review in the context of multiscale correlative imaging

Muhammad Arif et al.

Summary: The microstructure of shale plays a crucial role in determining hydrocarbon reserves and productivity, yet remains poorly understood due to complex pore space configurations and heterogeneity at multiple length scales. Recent advancements in imaging techniques have allowed for the observation of shale microstructure, specifically using mu CT methods, but limitations persist in capturing nanosized pores and organic matter. A multiscale correlative imaging framework, combining techniques such as mu CT, SEM, and FIB-SEM, is necessary for a comprehensive characterization of shale microstructure and offers a powerful tool for quantification.

Pore-scale imaging of displacement patterns in an altered-wettability carbonate

Qingyang Lin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates how pore-scale displacement affects macroscopic properties in an altered-wettability microporous carbonate using high-resolution X-ray imaging and a steady-state flow experiment. Different displacement patterns of oil and brine in the pore spaces were observed, leading to variations in relative permeability and residual oil saturation. These differences were primarily determined by the wettability of the rock.

Pore-scale imaging and analysis of low salinity waterflooding in a heterogeneous carbonate rock at reservoir conditions

Ahmed M. Selem et al.

Summary: X-ray micro-tomography was used to study fluid distribution and oil recovery during low salinity waterflooding in complex carbonate rock, revealing that smaller pores were invaded by low salinity brine leading to fluid redistribution and improved oil recovery.
