Supercritical CO2 coupled with mechanical force to enhance carbonation of fly ash and heavy metal solidification

Qixin Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that coupling supercritical CO2 with mechanical force can enhance the carbonation efficiency of fly ash and effectively immobilize heavy metals. Carbon sequestration and efficiency under supercritical CO2 conditions were significantly higher than under low-pressure conditions, while mechanical ball milling modification also improved the carbonation efficiency.

Experimental study and kinetics on CO2 mineral sequestration by the direct aqueous carbonation of pepper stalk ash

Endong Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the direct carbonation of incinerated pepper stalk ash (PSA) via an aqueous route under low-medium pressure conditions. It systematically explored the effects of various operating parameters on CO2 sequestration characteristics and proposed a new kinetic equation for a more precise fit to experimental data. In addition to solid carbonates, the carbonation of PSA yielded dry residues with 58.03 wt% potassium oxide, potentially usable as feedstock for potassium fertilizers.

Mechanochemical stabilization of heavy metals in fly ash from coal-fired power plants via dry milling and wet milling

Qixin Yuan et al.

Summary: Fly ash from coal-fired power plants is a major solid waste pollutant globally, and the mechanochemical method is effective in stabilizing heavy metals present in it. Both dry milling and wet milling methods can reduce the leaching rate of heavy metals significantly. Wet milling results in smaller fly ash particles, suggesting water weakens the agglomeration of fine particles.

The CO2 sequestration by supercritical carbonation of electric arc furnace slag

Jihye Kim et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing a supercritical carbonation process for CO2 sequestration using electric arc furnace slag, offering advantages such as higher reactivity and better economic feasibility compared to aqueous carbonation. Through empirical modeling and fundamental investigations, the study highlights the significant impact of slag particle size on carbonation efficiency and reveals the diffusion barrier in the carbonation process. The research sheds light on the reaction mechanism and provides insights for advancing the carbonation of industrial byproducts, particularly steelmaking slag.

Experimental and density functional theory study of the synergistic effect between steam and SO2 on CO2 capture of calcium-based sorbents

Donglin He et al.

Summary: This study examines the synergistic effect of steam and SO2 on the carbonation behaviors of sorbents in calcium looping technology. Experimental results indicate that steam enhances sulfation more than carbonation, and DFT calculation reveals that SO2 has a preferential adsorption on the CaO (100) surface in the presence of steam.

Sustainable aviation fuels and imminent technologies - CO2 emissions evolution towards 2050

Ivo Abrantes et al.

Summary: The aviation industry has promoted various approaches to reduce CO2 emissions, including improving aircraft technology and using sustainable low-carbon fuels. However, achieving carbon-neutral growth and a 50% reduction in net emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels will require a combination of imminent aircraft technologies with a higher introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Results show that these goals cannot be met solely by the current strategies, and carbon-neutral growth may only be possible by 2040 with the right combination of technologies and SAF introduction rates.
