Quantitative Analysis of Pore Structure and Its Impact on Methane Adsorption Capacity of Coal

Shipei Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between methane adsorption performance and pore structure in coal samples from typical methane-rich coalbeds in China. The results show significant heterogeneity in pore structure among samples, with irregular surfaces and inhomogeneous pore structures leading to stronger adsorption capability. Grey relational analysis identifies the importance of ultra-micropore volume, surface area, and fractal dimensions in methane adsorption, revealing the order of importance of these parameters.

Evaluating the changes of sorption and diffusion behaviors of Illinois coal with various water-based fracturing fluid treatments

Qiming Huang et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the impact of various fracturing fluids on gas sorption and diffusion behaviors in coal. Results showed that most fracturing fluids damage gas sorption capacity, except for slickwater. Extensive water washing can help recover sorption capacity, but diffusion coefficient recovery varies among different fluids, with guar gel showing the best recovery.

Modeling and experiment for effective diffusion coefficient of gas in water-saturated coal

Leilei Si et al.

Summary: An improved model was developed to calculate the effective diffusion coefficient of gas in a water-saturated coal core, providing more accurate results compared to traditional models. Experimental results also showed that as coal rank increases, saturated moisture and equilibrium moisture decrease, along with a shift in pore size dominance from micropore/mesopore-dominated to micropores-dominated.

The influence of long-time water intrusion on the mineral and pore structure of coal

Leilei Si et al.

Summary: Intrusion of formation water into coal seams reduces gas extraction efficiency. Experiments showed decreased mineral content and changed pore structure in coal due to water intrusion. Factors such as clay mineral collapse, mineral dissolution, and coal swelling play significant roles in influencing the pore structure of coal during water intrusion.

Adsorption and diffusion characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 in micropores and mesopores of bituminous coal: Molecular dynamics

Hang Long et al.

Summary: The research found that with the increase of pore size, the gas loading amount in the pore model increased, but the tight adsorption amount and adsorption heat decreased. The order of CO2 > CH4 > N2 is the arrangement order of tight adsorption amount, loading amount and adsorption heat. The diffusion characteristics of the three gases in the pores are CH4 > N2 > CO2, and larger pores are more conducive to gas diffusion.

Gas adsorption capacity changes in coals of different ranks after liquid nitrogen freezing

Lei Qin et al.

Summary: The study showed that freezing coal with liquid nitrogen has an impact on the gas adsorption capacity of coals of different ranks, with the effect varying with the coal rank. Additionally, the freezing also alters the contact angle and proportions of surface functional groups on the coal.

Insights on the characteristics and sources of gas from an underground coal mine using compositional data analysis

C. Ozgen Karacan et al.

Summary: Coal mine gas comes from the gas emission zone and longwall face of the mine, which can be controlled through different methods to be exhausted through ventilation systems. Understanding the evolution of gas composition from source to different sampling points can lead to better designed degasification and ventilation systems.
