Dissociable Cortical and Subcortical Mechanisms for Mediating the Influences of Visual Cues on Microsaccadic Eye Movements

Summary: Microsaccades, small saccades that occur when maintaining precise gaze fixation on a stationary point, play an important role in mediating covert visual selection effects. Studies have shown robust modulations in microsaccade directions and frequencies in peripheral cueing paradigms, indicating the potential significance of these eye movements in investigating visual selection mechanisms. Further research is needed to understand the neural mechanisms underlying cueing effects on microsaccades in primates, which could provide insights into cortical-subcortical neural interactions in perception, cognition, and action.
