The Role of Walking Experience in the Emergence of Gait Harmony in Typically Developing Toddlers

Daniela De Bartolo et al.

Summary: The ability to walk without support usually develops in the first year of a typically developing toddler's life and matures further in the following years. The harmony of mature walking is given by a specific self-similar structure of the ratios between the durations of different gait phases. The aim of this study was to investigate the evolution of this gait harmonic structure in the transition from supported to independent walking.

Effects of cognitive workload on heart and locomotor rhythms coupling

Daniela De Bartolo et al.

Summary: Different physiological signals can be coupled under specific conditions, with cognitive-motor interference observed during dual-task walking experiments. The cardiac and locomotor rhythms were found to be more strongly coupled at faster walking speeds, while coupling was weaker or absent at slower speeds and comfortable walking speeds.
