Decay of inhibition in motor imagery

Victoria K. E. Bart et al.

Summary: Global inhibition and effector-specific inhibition play important roles in preventing actual movements during motor imagery. With increasing response-stimulus intervals, both forms of inhibition decrease, but the decrease is less pronounced for global inhibition than for effector-specific inhibition, suggesting that global inhibition may last longer.

Expectations Affect the Contribution of Tonic Global Inhibition, but Not of Phasic Global Inhibition to Motor Imagery

Victoria K. E. Bart et al.

Summary: This study found that different forms of inhibition contribute to motor imagery to varying degrees, with the contribution of global inhibition depending partly on one's expectations about upcoming actions. Different forms of inhibition complement each other, with tonic global inhibition being modulated by expectation effects.

The Relationship Between Internal Motor Imagery and Motor Inhibition in School-Aged Children: A Cross-Sectional Study

Cuiping Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that as children grow older, their response time decreases, accuracy increases, and motor inhibition efficiency increases in internal motor imagery tasks, indicating that internal motor imagery changes with age.

Inhibitory mechanisms in motor imagery: disentangling different forms of inhibition using action mode switching

Victoria K. E. Bart et al.

Summary: Evidence of global and effector-specific inhibition was observed in motor imagery, but evidence for inhibition retrieved during target processing was inconclusive. In two experiments, evidence for effector-specific inhibition was observed.
