Inspiratory- and expiratory-gated transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation have different effects on heart rate in healthy subjects: preliminary results

Bartlomiej Paleczny et al.

Summary: This study compared the cardiovascular effects of respiratory-gated taVNS in healthy subjects. The results showed that expiratory-gated and non-respiratory-gated taVNS had cardioinhibitory effects in subjects with high pre-stimulatory heart rate, while inspiratory-gated taVNS did not affect heart rate. The cardiac and vascular effects of taVNS depended on the pre-stimulatory heart rate.

The RNS System: brain-responsive neurostimulation for the treatment of epilepsy

Beata Jarosiewicz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the NeuroPace RNS System, the only brain-responsive neurostimulation device, and the results of multi-year clinical trials. Brain-responsive neurostimulation has the potential to be used for treating episodic neurological disorders with a neurophysiological biomarker of severity, and combining advanced machine learning with chronic ambulatory brain data collected by the RNS System could lead to personalized treatment for each patient.

Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Humans Induces Pupil Dilation and Attenuates Alpha Oscillations

Omer Sharon et al.

Summary: In this study, the short-term effects of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) in healthy male volunteers were investigated. The results showed that tVNS led to robust pupil dilation and greater attenuation of occipital alpha oscillations compared to sham stimulation, indicating that tVNS can induce arousal markers beyond somatosensory stimulation and mimic the effects of invasive VNS.

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Improves Spatial Working Memory in Healthy Young Adults

Jin-Bo Sun et al.

Summary: Working memory (WM) is a core component of higher cognitive functions, and the technique of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has a modulating effect on WM performance, especially in offline taVNS significantly improving hit rates in spatial 3-back tasks.

A transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation study on verbal order memory

Edith Kaan et al.

Summary: Research suggests that transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) can enhance the recall accuracy of healthy adults when it comes to remembering the order of words, particularly when the words are phonologically similar. This indicates that tVNS may improve selective attention and inhibitory control in individuals.
