EllenbergNvalues of bryophytes in Central Europe*

Josef Simmel et al.

Summary: This study presents the Ellenberg indicator values for Central European bryophytes, analyzing different variables related to morphology, taxonomy, Red List status, and ecology. The research found that peat mosses, foliose hepatics, and species with porous leaves had lower mean N values, while ecologically unspecific and annual species had higher mean values. Comparisons with vascular plants and macromycetes from Central Europe were also conducted.

The efficiency of retention measures in continuous-cover forestry for conserving epiphytic cryptogams: A case study on Abies alba

Stefan Kaufmann et al.

Summary: Retention forestry is an effective method to create structurally more diverse forests, which can have a positive impact on epiphytic bryophytes and lichens. In continuous-cover forests, retained trees, especially habitat trees, have shown to support higher species richness and diversity of lichens. Species diversity of tree species may play a more important role in protecting epiphytic bryophytes and lichens than stem diameter.

Temporal changes in the ground vegetation in spruce forests in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) -bryophytes are better indicators of the impact of liming and of sulphur and nitrogen deposition than the herb layer

Martin Baumann et al.

Summary: The study in spruce forest communities found that, with decreasing sulphur deposition and ongoing nitrogen deposition, the herb layer on unlimed plots remained stable while the bryophyte layer increased in coverage and species richness. On limed plots, herb layer species richness significantly increased, with effects escalating with liming intensity.

Temporal changes in the ground vegetation in spruce forests in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) - bryophytes are better indicators of the impact of liming and of sulphur and nitrogen deposition than the herb layer

Martin Baumann et al.

Summary: This study examined the impacts of decreasing sulphur deposition and consistent high nitrogen deposition on the species composition and diversity in the herb and bryophyte layer of spruce forest communities with varying liming intensity. The results showed that liming led to an increase in species richness in the herb layer, while the bryophyte layer experienced more complex changes with frequent turnover of species. Additionally, the bryophyte layer proved to be a sensitive indicator of air pollution changes, with liming acting as a disturbance influencing both the herb and bryophyte layers.
