Discrimination of SINTOX® GSR against environmental particles and its automated investigation by SEM/EDS

Robin Bender et al.

Summary: A fundamental problem in gunshot residue analysis is the distinction between environmental particles and GSR. The introduction of heavy metal free primers has exacerbated this issue. A new classification scheme based on the presence of titanium and zinc in particles has been developed to improve the accuracy of identifying SINTOX (R) GSR and reduce false-positive findings.

Development of tailor-made inorganic gunshot residue (IGSR) microparticle standards and characterization with a multi-technique approach

Korina Menking-Hoggatt et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop IGSR microparticle standards to enhance analytical capabilities and evaluate them using SEM-EDS, LIBS, and ICP-MS. The research is anticipated to assist forensic and environmental scientists by providing IGSR standards that can strengthen research, expand access to new detection techniques, and enhance laboratories' cross-validation and quality assurance.

Survey of gunshot residue prevalence on the hands of individuals from various population groups in and outside Europe

Amalia Stamouli et al.

Summary: This study, conducted by 32 forensic laboratories in Europe, investigated the prevalence of Gunshot Residue (GSR) particles in specific subpopulations and the general population. Significant variability in results was observed due to laboratory, country and sample effects, indicating the importance of considering these parameters in result interpretation.
