Exfoliated bentonite/alginate nanocomposite hydrogel enhances intestinal delivery of probiotics by resistance to gastric pH and on-demand disintegration

Jihyun Kim et al.

Summary: The developed exfoliated bentonite/alginate nanocomposite hydrogels show promising results in protecting probiotics and releasing them in the intestine. Compared to alginate hydrogel, the nanocomposite demonstrated better survival and gradual release in acidic conditions, making it a potential platform for intestinal delivery of probiotics.

Evaluation of Pediococcus pentosaceus strains as probiotic adjunct cultures for soybean milk post-fermentation

Dan Hu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the fermentation characteristics and properties of soybean milk fermented by four Pediococcus pentosaceus strains. The results showed that these strains exhibited antibacterial activity, with survival rates above 90% in simulated gastrointestinal environments, satisfying probiotic requirements. Among the strains, QK-1 showed the weakest acidification of fermented soybean milk, and all strains maintained stable bacterial counts after 28 days of storage, with enhanced antioxidant ability post-fermentation.

Assembly of propylene glycol alginate/β-lactoglobulin composite hydrogels induced by ethanol for co-delivery of probiotics and curcumin

Jiaqi Su et al.

Summary: Probiotics and curcumin were encapsulated within a propylene glycol alginate-based hydrogel delivery system, which was effective at sustaining the release of curcumin and protecting LGG cells. The composite hydrogel assembly demonstrated low-energy and green approach to co-deliver probiotics and curcumin, making it an ideal delivery vehicle with remarkable biocompatibility.

Interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels of soy protein isolate and sugar beet pectin as a potential carrier for probiotics

Wenjia Yan et al.

Summary: The combination of SPI and SBP can be used to prepare an IPN hydrogel with tunable properties. The addition of probiotics resulted in changes in gel properties, decreasing storage modulus and hardness. Probiotics exposed tryptophan-containing extension regions within SPI molecules and hindered the formation of covalent cross-links or physical interactions during gelation.

Effects of the short-term administration of Pediococcus pentosaceus on physiological characteristics, inflammation, and intestinal microecology in mice

Shumao Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of short-term administration of different genotypes of P. pentosaceus on physiological characteristics, inflammation, and intestinal microecology in mice. Results showed that various strains of P. pentosaceus had different effects on gut microbiota and inflammation, with some strains being harmful while others beneficial. The presence of different genotypes of bacteriocin may explain the variations among strains, providing theoretical support for further exploring the probiotic effects of P. pentosaceus.
