Understanding disgust-based food rejection in picky and non-picky eaters: Willingness to touch and taste familiar foods with changes

Helen Coulthard et al.

Summary: The tendency to feel disgusted is associated with picky eating, with picky eaters being less willing to touch or taste any food with changes compared to non-picky eaters. Disgust sensitivity plays a mediating role in the relationship between willingness to taste different food changes and the evaluation of those changes as safe or inedible for picky eaters. Further research is needed to explore strategies to reduce maladaptive disgust responses towards changes in familiar and edible foods.

Eating Habits during the COVID-19 Lockdown in Italy: The Nutritional and Lifestyle Side Effects of the Pandemic

Federica Grant et al.

Summary: To limit the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, a nationwide lockdown started in Italy in March 2020. In this unpredictable situation, a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire was carried out to evaluate how Italian habits changed during this period, the determinants of changes, and the effect on food waste prevention. The study found that many people in Italy improved the quality of their diet during the lockdown by increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fish or shellfish, but also showed unfavorable changes such as excessive consumption of sweets or pastries, comfort foods, and a lack of physical activity. Additionally, the study revealed that respondents with generally high adherence to the Mediterranean Diet improved their eating habits, while those with low adherence remained unchanged, and nearly 80% of respondents were sensitive to food waste.

The interaction of negative psychological well-being and picky eating in relation to disordered eating in undergraduate students

Wesley R. Barnhart et al.

Summary: The study found positive relationships between picky eating and binge eating, dietary restraint, eating concerns, overall eating pathology, and all negative psychological correlates. Higher levels of inflexible eating, anxiety, and stress seemed to exacerbate the relationship between picky eating and disordered eating, particularly in terms of eating concerns.
