Fifteen Years of Regulating Nutrition and Health Claims in Europe: The Past, the Present and the Future

Alie de Boer

Summary: This paper discusses the regulation of nutrition and health claims in the EU since 2006, detailing the authorization of over 300 claims and the impact of the authorization requirements on the use of claims on foods. It identifies five challenges that negatively affect the current legislation, which aim to protect consumers from false claims and stimulate innovation in the EU. Addressing these challenges and continuously analyzing consumer and operator understanding and usage of claims will ensure the effectiveness of the regulation in the present and future.
