First detection of Eustrongylides excisus (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae) in big-scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) from the lake Massaciuccoli (Northwest Tuscany, Italy): implications for public health and seafood quality

L. Guardone et al.

Summary: This study reported, for the first time, the occurrence of parasitic nematode Eustrongylides excisus in big-scale sand smelt specimens in Italy. It highlights potential quality and public health issues in the fish supply chain and consumption of raw fish.

Could Fish Feeding Behaviour and Size Explain Prevalence Differences of the Nematode Eustrongylides excisus among Species? The Case Study of Lake Garda

Vasco Menconi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the parasitism of Eustrongylides excisus in freshwater fish in Lake Garda, Italy, and found significant differences in prevalence values among different fish species. Piscivorous fish species were more likely to be positive for E. excisus, with the highest prevalence in Micropterus salmoides. Additionally, a negative correlation between body size and E. excisus was observed in Perca fluviatilis, which mainly feeds on zooplankton and benthic invertebrates.

Morphological and molecular characterization of Eustrongylides excisus larvae (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae) in Sander lucioperca (L.) from Northern Turkey

Gokmen Zafer Pekmezci et al.

Summary: The genus Eustrongylides includes parasitic nematodes affecting fish and piscivorous birds, with limited molecular characterization of E. excisus available. This study identified E. excisus larvae from pike-perch in Northern Turkey, providing the first records of SSU rRNA and COI sequences for E. excisus in GenBank and a molecular characterization in Turkey. The sequences obtained can be used for further phylogenetic studies of Eustrongylides species worldwide.

A risk scoring system for seafood supply chain breaches and examination of freshwater fish imported to Australia

Michelle Williams et al.

Summary: Legislative changes in Australia have shifted responsibility to exporting countries to provide evidence of adherence to food safety standards. This study developed a risk scoring method to identify countries as 'Freshwater fish high risk' and examined seafood supply chain breaches in exported products. Results showed significant differences in breaches between countries with high risk scores.
