Characterizing effects of excess copper levels in a human astrocytic cell line with focus on oxidative stress markers

Barbara Witt et al.

Summary: Copper, an essential trace element, can lead to adverse effects when present in excess levels. This study investigated the toxic potential of copper on human astrocytic cell models, showing substantial cytotoxic effects and disruption of mitochondrial function. Additionally, excess copper also affected the balance of other essential elements like calcium, iron, and manganese, which may contribute to oxidative stress and neurodegenerative disorders.
