Mutation accumulation in inbreeding populations under evolution of the selfing rate

Kuangyi Xu

Summary: The coevolution of selfing rates and mutation accumulation in populations can lead to fluctuating selfing rates over time due to the invasion of alleles that affect selfing and outcrossing. Mutation fixation, mainly driven by Muller's ratchet, is sensitive to changes in selfing rates, resulting in punctuated accumulation of mutations. Factors such as recombination and the effects of selfing modifier loci influence the dynamics, leading to variation in selfing rates and mutation accumulation rates between conspecific populations. The effects of genomic mutation rates on selfing rates and mutation fixation can be complex and non-monotonic.
