Histological Changes of Cervical Disc Tissue in Patients with Degenerative Ossification

Yang Xiong et al.

Summary: The histological features of cervical disc degeneration in patients with degenerative ossification (DO) and its potential mechanisms were explored in this study. It was found that cervical disc degeneration was more severe in patients with DO, and the local higher content of TGF-131, p-Smad2, and p-Smad3 were involved in this process.

Delayed notochordal cell disappearance through integrin α5β1 mechanotransduction during ex-vivo dynamic loading-induced intervertebral disc degeneration

Yutaro Kanda et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the importance of integrin alpha 5 beta 1 in maintaining the homeostasis of notochordal cells. Dynamic compressive loading induced cell apoptosis and senescence in notochordal cells, which could be delayed by inhibiting integrin alpha 5 beta 1.

Development of a standardized histopathology scoring system for intervertebral disc degeneration and regeneration in rabbit models-An initiative of the ORSspine section

Sarah E. Gullbrand et al.

Summary: This study established a new standardized scoring system to assess disc degeneration and regeneration in the rabbit model based on reported practice in the literature, a survey of spine researchers, and validation testing. The new scoring system provides an avenue to improve standardization, allow a more accurate comparison between labs, and more robust evaluation of pathophysiology and regenerative treatments across the field.

Proteoglycan-depleted regions of annular injury promote nerve ingrowth in a rabbit disc degeneration model

Long Xin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using chABC-based PLGA/fibrin gel promotes nerve growth around the defect area while reducing the inhibitory effects of proteoglycan-mediated nerve and blood vessel growth.
