CO2-Triggered ON/OFF Wettability Switching on Bioinspired Polylactic Acid Porous Films for Controllable Bioadhesion

Hongyao Yin et al.

Summary: This study fabricated biocompatible PLA honeycomb porous films with CO2-gas-triggered ON/OFF switching wettability, where the sensitive CO2 groups act as a switch controlling water entry into the pores. By adjusting the PLA/MET ratio, the CO2-sensitive groups can be precisely arranged, resulting in hydrophobic-hydrophilic conversion in the films.

Advances in Application of Azobenzene as a Trigger in Biomedicine: Molecular Design and Spontaneous Assembly

Hong-Bo Cheng et al.

Summary: Azobenzene, a well-known derivative of stimulus-responsive molecular switches, has shown superior performance in biomedical applications. Recent studies have focused on developing long-wavelength-responsive azobenzene, matching its characteristics to the bio-optical window for larger and more effective stimulus response. The use of azobenzene as a hypoxia-sensitive connector has also resulted in on/off state switching of properties such as pharmacology and fluorescence activity. Here, we summarize recent advances in utilizing azobenzene as a trigger in biomedicine.

Light-triggered surface properties of a glycolized PolyEthylene Terephthalate film by surface-initiated ATRP of azobenzene monomer

Laurence Pessoni et al.

Summary: The surface modification of glycolyzed polyethylene terephthalate (PETg) was achieved through surface-initiated ATRP method, resulting in the synthesis of copolymer P(BuA-stat-SA). By adjusting the glass transition temperature of the copolymer, light-triggered UV protection and wettability were successfully achieved. These materials can be used in the field of flexible electronic substrates to enhance adhesion and wetting properties through surface property tuning.

New Photoresponsive Poly(meth)acrylates Bearing Azobenzene Moieties Obtained via ATRP Polymerization Exhibiting Liquid-Crystalline Behavior

Piotr Cieciorski et al.

Summary: A series of photoresponsive poly(meth)acrylates containing azobenzene groups were synthesized, showing reversible structural transformation under light illumination and high potential for energy storage applications. The enthalpy determined from DSC was relatively high, indicating liquid-crystalline behavior of the materials.
