First evidence of altered microbiota and intestinal damage and their link to absence epilepsy in a genetic animal model, the WAG/Rij rat

Rita Citraro et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant role of gut microbiota in absence epilepsy in a genetic animal model, showing that manipulation of microbiota through FMT can effectively reduce seizure occurrence.

Vortioxetine increases absence-like seizures in WAG/Rij rats but decreases penicillin- and pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures in Wistar rats

Hatice Aygun et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that vortioxetine has anticonvulsant activity in experimental epilepsy models induced by penicillin and pentylenetetrazole, but exhibited proconvulsant activity in a specific genetic absence epilepsy model. Additionally, vortioxetine did not affect the amplitude of epileptiform activity in any of the experimental epilepsy models.

Probiotics alleviate depressive behavior in chronic unpredictable mild stress rat models by remodeling intestinal flora

Qiufeng Li et al.

Summary: By remodeling intestinal flora, probiotics can reduce the depressive behavior induced by CUMS in rats, increase levels of norepinephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine, and inhibit the expression of ACTH and corticosterone. Importantly, the effect of both paroxetine and probiotics on microorganisms is similar.

Gut metabolite S-equol ameliorates hyperexcitability in entorhinal cortex neurons following Theiler murine encephalomyelitis virus-induced acute seizures

Allison Gallucci et al.

Summary: Our study reveals that the diversity of gut microbiota is significantly altered in TMEV-infected mice 5-7 days post-infection, showing a beta diversity separation in TMEV-infected mice depending on seizure phenotype, and a lower abundance of genus Allobaculum in TMEV-infected mice regardless of seizure phenotype. Conversely, a specific reduction in the S-equol-producing genus Adlercreutzia was identified as a microbial hallmark of seizure phenotype post-TMEV infection. Electrophysiological recordings indicated that exogenous S-equol modifies cortical neuronal physiology and ameliorates TMEV-induced hyperexcitability in entorhinal cortex neurons.
