Remarks on dynamic cohesive fracture under static pre-stress-with a comparison to finite fracture mechanics

T. Laschuetza et al.

Summary: The role of inertia effects during crack formation under non-singular static pre-stress is investigated using a linear softening cohesive zone model. In the case of a 1D tensile bar, about one third of the released strain energy is converted into kinetic energy during the finite time of decohesion. Results from dynamic finite element analyses using the same cohesive zone model are compared with predictions from finite fracture mechanics in the case of crack initiation from a circular hole in a 2D plate under remote tension or compression, showing a complex dependence on the hole radius. Both methods capture the critical load for crack initiation at the hole well, but only the numerical cohesive zone model analyses resolve the highly transient process of crack nucleation.

Crack onset in stretched open hole PMMA plates considering linear and non-linear elastic behaviours

A. Leite et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical analysis of PMMA holed plates under tensile stress using Finite Fracture Mechanics revealed non-linear stress-strain behavior and a hole size effect on failure load. Development of novel numerical implementation using both linear and non-linear elastic material models, along with an inverse procedure to estimate strength properties, provided good correlations with experimental results.

Dynamic fracture analysis in Brazilian test: application to pharmaceutical tablets

B. Croquelois et al.

Summary: This study used the flattened disk Brazilian test to evaluate the critical fracture parameter of a pharmaceutical tablet, and established the energy release rate function through experimental tests and numerical simulations. Dynamic propagation and Rapid Crack Propagation mechanisms were observed during experimental tests, and a numerical analysis was used to evaluate the dynamic correction factor needed to account for inertia effects. The necessity to consider inertia effects in estimating fracture energy for the material in the Brazilian test was discussed.
