Preliminary Evidence That Cortical Amyloid Burden Predicts Poor Response to Antidepressant Medication Treatment in Cognitively Intact Individuals With Late-Life Depression

Warren D. Taylor et al.

Summary: The pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, amyloid accumulation, may influence depression and cognitive decline in older adults. This study found that amyloid-positive participants showed less improvement in depression severity and lower likelihood of remission compared to amyloid-negative participants in response to antidepressant treatment. Alternative treatment approaches may be necessary for amyloid-positive depressed elders.

Excess tau PET ligand retention in elderly patients with major depressive disorder

Sho Moriguchi et al.

Summary: The study found that tau protein accumulations in the brains of MDD patients were significantly higher than healthy controls, especially in patients with psychotic symptoms. These findings suggest that tau depositions may underlie MDD, particularly in those with psychotic symptoms.

Additive interaction of mid- to late-life depression and cerebrovascular disease on the risk of dementia: a nationwide population-based cohort study

Yoo Jin Jang et al.

Summary: In this population-based cohort study, depression and cerebrovascular disease were found to increase the risk of dementia, and their coexistence was shown to additively increase dementia risk more than the sum of the individual risks. The interaction between depression and CVD was statistically significant, indicating a synergistic effect on dementia risk.
