Summary: Neuroanatomical changes were investigated in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) compared to major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls. The results showed selective cortical thinning over the medial orbitofrontal cortex in PNES patients compared to wider regions of thinning in MDD patients. Somatoform dissociation was the only significantly different psychopathological assessment between PNES and MDD.

A minority of patients with functional seizures have abnormalities on neuroimaging

Summary: This study found that patients with functional seizures may have epilepsy-associated abnormalities on neuroimaging, with a significant portion being borderline findings. The most common abnormality was hippocampal sclerosis, with majority of borderline findings involving hippocampal atrophy. The higher rate of these abnormalities may be influenced by the indication of the study, the subtlety of borderline findings, or the effects of antiseizure medications.

Altered sense of self during seizures in the posteromedial cortex
