Sex-specific associations with DNA methylation in lung tissue demonstrate smoking interactions

Hyeon-Kyoung Koo et al.

Summary: The study found that women are more susceptible to the effects of cigarette smoking, and DNA methylation in lung tissue may be related to sex differences and interact with smoking; the sex-specific associations with DNA methylation in lung tissue among white subjects are widespread, potentially revealing genes and pathways relevant to sex differences in the damaging effects of cigarette smoking.

DNA Methylation in Babies Born to Nonsmoking Mothers Exposed to Secondhand Smoke during Pregnancy: An Epigenome-Wide Association Study

Bernard F. Fuemmeler et al.

Summary: Maternal prenatal plasma cotinine levels were found to be associated with DNA methylation changes in umbilical cord blood of newborns, even in nonsmoking pregnant women. The altered DNA methylation was related to genes involved in development, carcinogenesis, and neuronal functioning. These findings suggest that low levels of smoke exposure during pregnancy may have significant impacts on offspring DNA methylation.
