Identifying the habitat suitability and built-in corridors for Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) movement in the northern highlands of Pakistan

Babar Zahoor et al.

Summary: Identifying suitable habitat and corridors for movement is crucial for biodiversity conservation in the face of climate change. This study focused on the Asiatic black bear population in the Northern Highlands of Pakistan and found both current and future suitable habitat areas. The model predicted an increase in suitable habitat under future scenarios, with a majority of the current suitable habitat identified as climate refugia. The results provide valuable information for conservation strategies and management plans to mitigate climate change impacts on Asiatic black bears.

Climate and land use changes shift the distribution and dispersal of two umbrella species in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region

Yunchuan Dai et al.

Summary: Biodiversity loss from climate and land use change is a global issue, particularly concerning in biodiverse regions like the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. This study focused on predicting the impacts of future climate and land use change on Tibetan and Himalayan brown bears in the HKH region. Results indicate that both bear species will be negatively affected in the 2070s, with shrinking distribution areas and shifting to higher altitudes. The findings highlight the importance of protecting these species and providing a scientific basis for conservation efforts in the HKH region.

Projected shifts in the distribution range of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) in the Hindu Kush Himalaya due to climate change

Babar Zahoor et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a major threat to vulnerable species like the Asiatic black bear. Research in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region found extensive suitable habitats for the bear, but projected shifts towards higher elevations due to climate change may increase human-bear conflicts. Recommendations such as managing climate refugia, enhancing natural reserves, and improving monitoring of bear populations could help mitigate adverse impacts of climate change on bears.

Impact of climate change on Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) and its autumn diet in the northern highlands of Pakistan

Babar Zahoor et al.

Summary: Approximately 20%-30% of plant and animal species are at risk of extinction by the end of the 21st century due to climate change, impacting the distribution and survival of animal species relying on plants. Climate change is projected to alter species composition and distribution in the forested landscapes of the northern highlands of Pakistan, potentially affecting the Asiatic black bear.

Distribution modelling and climate change risk assessment strategy for rare Himalayan Galliformes species using archetypal data abundant cohorts for adaptation planning

Priyamvada Bagaria et al.

Summary: Using a macroecological approach, this study successfully modeled the distribution of species in the Himalayan arc and assessed the impacts of climate change on their distribution. Out of 34 Galliformes species in the region, 21 were included in the study and analyzed using various modeling frameworks. Precipitation emerged as a significant driving factor for all clusters, with the Random Forest model performing best across the different groups.

Damages Done by Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus) in Moji Game Reserve and its Surroundings, Leepa Valley, Azad Jammu and Kashmir ( Pakistan)

Babar Zahoor et al.

Summary: This study investigated human-black bear conflict in the Moji Game Reserve and surrounding areas in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, identifying livestock killings, crop raiding, and human casualties as the main causes. The study found significant damages in terms of livestock and crops, with negative perceptions towards black bears among the local population posing a threat to conservation efforts.
