Exploring thermal comfort of urban buildings based on local climate zones

Jiayi Ren et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the regional characteristics of land surface temperatures (LSTs) and thermal comfort in Zhengzhou, China. The findings show that built-up areas have significantly higher LSTs compared to natural surfaces, and areas with sparsely distributed buildings exhibit better thermal comfort. The correlations between LST and different vegetation types vary among local climate zones (LCZs).

How do low wind speeds and high levels of air pollution support the spread of COVID-19?

Mario Coccia

Summary: This study suggests that cities with high wind speed tend to have fewer COVID-19 infections, while cities in hinterland zones with low wind speed and high air pollution levels tend to have more infections. High concentrations of air pollutants combined with low wind speeds may promote the spread of the virus in polluted air.

The relationship between land surface temperature and artificial impervious surface fraction in 682 global cities: spatiotemporal variations and drivers

Qiquan Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and artificial impervious surface fraction (AISF) in 682 global cities. The results show that LST tends to increase with AISF in most cities, with variations depending on climate zones and seasons. Driver analyses suggest that changes in surface biophysical properties play a significant role in the spatial-temporal variation of LST.

Cooling Effect of Different Land Cover Types: A Case Study in Xi'an and Xianyang, China

Yuhe Ma et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization leads to the urban heat island effect, where vegetation and water can help alleviate this effect, with tree cover having a greater cooling distance but water bodies reducing temperature more significantly within that distance. The study identifies the importance of effectively rearranging landscapes with cooling effects in urban planning to combat the urban heat island problem.

Summary: This study used time series of remote sensing data and land change information to investigate the urban heat island (UHI) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from 1986 to 2017. The results showed that the UHI intensity in the region was 2.2 degrees Celsius with an increasing trend of 0.02 degrees Celsius per year, and different urban land cover intensities can affect UHI intensity.

Summary: Understanding the urban thermal environment is crucial for urban planning and mitigating urban heat islands. This study examined the surface thermal performances of cities in three urban agglomerations in China and found that mid-rise buildings have higher surface temperatures than high- and low-rise buildings, and compact buildings are warmer than open buildings. The study also highlighted the significant diurnal and seasonal variations in land surface temperature, especially in the Jing-Jin-Ji region.

Summary: Studying urban heat islands is crucial as urban land surface and heat island research are closely related. Temperature differences between urban and rural areas are influenced by building and green space coverage, with significant variations between day and night temperatures. The quality of life for urban residents is impacted by heatwaves, and urban planning should take steps to alleviate the urban heat island effect.
