The efficiencies of inorganic mercury bio-methylation by aerobic bacteria under different oxygen concentrations

Dan Cao et al.

Summary: Limited information is available about the bio-methylation of inorganic mercury (iHg) under aerobic conditions. In this study, two gamma-proteobacteria strains obtained from the soil of The Three Gorges Reservoir demonstrated effective aerobic transformation capacities of iHg into methylmercury (MeHg). The two strains differed significantly in bacterial growth rate and MeHg production, with MeHg production showing a two-staged process dominated by biomethylation and bio-demethylation.

Production and functionality of exopolysaccharides in bacteria exposed to a toxic metal environment

Krishnamurthy Mathivanan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production and compositional analysis of exopolysaccharides produced by Bacillus cereus KMS3-1 grown in metal amended conditions and evaluated their metal adsorption efficacy. The results showed that EPS from KMS3-1 strain exhibited efficient adsorption capacity for Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II), making them potential chelating agents for wastewater treatment. The study also confirmed the proficient metal adsorption of EPS through XRD analysis, highlighting their potential application in environmental remediation.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of pH, initial concentration, and temperature on bacteria in different stages of biofilm development in removing Cu(II) from stormwater runoff. The maximum removal efficiency was observed at pH 6. EPS protected CFUs in mature biofilms, while the CFUs number significantly decreased in biofilms on day 1 of incubation.
