Global distribution and trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in human blood and breast milk: A quantitative meta-analysis of studies published in the period 2000-2019

Tong Meng et al.

Summary: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame-retardants found globally in human bodies, with higher levels in North America and Asia, especially in the occupational population in Asia due to poorly controlled e-waste recycling operations. Despite most of the chemicals being phased out, no substantial decreases in PBDE concentrations in blood and breast milk have been observed globally. Future studies are needed to investigate the potential health risks associated with PBDE exposure.
