Hydrogeochemical characteristics, sources and human health risk assessment of heavy metal dispersion in the mine pit water-surface water-groundwater system in the largest manganese mine in Ghana

Anthony Ewusi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the hydrogeochemical characteristics and sources of heavy metals in the mine pit water-surface water-groundwater system in the Nsuta manganese mining area in western Ghana. It also explores the potential human health risks associated with consuming water contaminated with heavy metals. The findings reveal that the water pH in the system ranges from slightly acidic to alkaline, and there is intense water-rock interaction and mineral dissolution. The concentrations of heavy metals are high in the water, posing toxicity risks. Therefore, measures should be taken to protect public health.

Spatial distribution and ecological assessment of nickel in sediments of a typical small plateau lake from Yunnan Province, China

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on the spatial distribution and ecological risks of nickel in the sediments of Jianhu Lake in China, and the influence of pH and TOC on nickel concentrations. The results indicated moderate nickel pollution and risk levels in most surface sediments, while moderate nickel pollution and high risk levels were observed in most sediment cores. Additionally, pH and TOC were found to have a significant impact on the distribution and concentration of nickel in the lake sediments.

Arsenic in leafy vegetable plants grown on mine water-contaminated soils: Uptake, human health risk and remedial effects of biochar

Junhao Qin et al.

Summary: Field investigation and microcosm experiment were conducted to examine the uptake of arsenic by vegetable plants grown on the soils contaminated by acidic mine water and evaluate the human health risk from consuming the vegetables. Plant uptake of arsenic was related to the ratio of phosphorus to arsenic in soil solution for the same vegetable species. Bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC) of arsenic was highly variable amongst the different vegetable species with water spinach (white stem) and sweet potato leaf being identified as major vegetable species with high BAC. There was a reasonably good relationship between the gastric phase-bioaccessible arsenic and the gastrointestinal phase-bioaccessible arsenic. Consumption of the vegetables grown in the investigated area poses a significantly potential human health risk with a hazard quotient (HQ) of 2.7. Application of biochar significantly inhibited the uptake of arsenic by the vegetable plant due to protonation of biochar surfaces under acidic conditions, which favoured adsorption of arsenic. The bioaccessibility of arsenic in the edible part of vegetable was also reduced due to biochar application. The HQ of the test vegetable plant (Gynura cusimbua) after soil amendment by biochar was reduced to 2 from 6 for the unamended soil.

Evaluating the health risks of heavy metals from vegetables grown on soil irrigated with untreated and treated wastewater in Arba Minch, Ethiopia

Awoke Guadie et al.

Summary: The study found that the aerobic-anoxic treatment enhanced water quality and was beneficial for soil. Vegetables irrigated with untreated wastewater had higher concentrations of heavy metals, posing potential risks to human health. The health indexes showed that lead and cadmium levels in wastewater-irrigated vegetables could lead to non-carcinogenic disease for adults and children.

Heavy metal pollution of street dust in the largest city of Mexico, sources and health risk assessment

Anahi Aguilera et al.

Summary: In large industrialized cities, street dust with heavy metal contamination poses a potential risk to human health, mainly from vehicular traffic emissions. The street dust in Mexico City is mainly contaminated with Pb, Zn, and Cu, with Cr and Pb posing health risks to children. Proposed contamination limits for heavy metals in Mexico City street dust could help decrease anthropic emissions and protect public health.

Human health risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultural soil and food crops in Hamadan, Iran

Ava Kharazi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the heavy metal content in water, agricultural soil, and crops irrigated with wastewater or tube-well water in Hamadan, Iran using ICP-MS. The Monte Carlo simulation method was employed for exposure assessment and investigation of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of the studied elements. The results showed that while most heavy metal contents in agricultural soil were below suggested limits, certain elements like Ni exceeded the limits and there were elevated carcinogenic risks associated with elements like As, Ni, and Cd in the crops.

Assessment of arsenic and its associated health risks due to mining activities in parts of North-central Nigeria: Probabilistic approach using Monte Carlo

Muyiwa Michael Orosun

Summary: The study found significant arsenic pollution due to mining activities in parts of North-central Nigeria, with very low bioaccumulation factors and ingestion pathway being the dominant exposure pathway. The non-cancerous risk of arsenic in drinking water is high, confirmed by the Hazard Index (HI) values. The Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk is classified as level II to level III for soil and grain samples, and level VI to level VII for water samples, indicating high cancer risks.
