Geochemical modeling unravels the water chemical changes along the largest Mexican river

Selene Olea-Olea et al.

Summary: This study used inverse geochemical models to determine the water chemistry of the Tropical Usumacinta River and the factors that influence it. The results showed that water-rock interactions, specifically carbonate and silicate weathering, play a significant role in controlling the river's chemical composition. Additionally, agricultural activities were found to have an impact on the water quality.

Deep groundwater recharge mechanism in the sedimentary and crystalline terrains of Sri Lanka: A study based on environmental isotope and chemical signatures

K. S. G. S. Priyadarshanee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and chemical properties of groundwater in different terrains in Sri Lanka using isotope and geochemical approaches. The results show that groundwater chemistry is mainly influenced by cation exchange or rock water interaction. Groundwater in sedimentary terrains is mainly recharged by rainfall, while groundwater in crystalline terrains is mixed with surface water. Additionally, thermal and non-thermal waters, although originating from the same recharge source, have different flow paths and chemical characteristics.

Chemical evolution of runoff in Eastern Mediterranean mountainous karstic terrains

Michael Zilberbrand et al.

Summary: The study found that the main processes shaping runoff chemistry in the central mountain rim of Israel are dissolution of dry fallout and salts from previous small-scale runoff events. Calcium and sulfate concentrations in the runoff are defined mainly by the dissolution of dust minerals, while sodium and chloride concentrations come from rain and dissolution of halite. Magnesium is mainly connected to dissolution of dolomite outcrops.

Research on the exploitation and utilization degree of mineral water based on ecological base flow in the Changbai Mountain basalt area, northeast China

Ge Wang et al.

Summary: Mineral water from the Changbai Mountain basalt area is China's crucial source of drinking water, but its extensive exploitation threatens interdependent river ecosystems. Calculating the exploitation based on ecological base flow is essential for sustainable use of mineral water.

Mechanisms of arsenic contamination associated with hydrochemical characteristics in coastal alluvial aquifers using multivariate statistical technique and hydrogeochemical modeling: a case study in Rayong province, eastern Thailand

Satika Boonkaewwan et al.

Summary: The release of arsenic in groundwater in Rayong Province may originate from the dissolution of iron oxides and hydroxides, with the speciation of arsenic being controlled by the reducing environment of the groundwater system. Anthropogenic inputs and intensive pumping activities may exacerbate the reducing environment, facilitating the release of As(III).

The geochemical behavior of molybdenum in the modern Yangtze Estuary and East China Sea shelf

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of molybdenum in the Yangtze Estuary and East China Sea shelf, highlighting the importance of freshwater-seawater mixing and fluid-solid molybdenum exchange processes in influencing molybdenum concentrations and isotopic compositions. The results provide valuable insights into molybdenum cycling in estuarine systems and offer indispensable quantitative data for global molybdenum budgets.

Quantifying biodegradation rate constants of o-xylene by combining compound-specific isotope analysis and groundwater dating

Andreas Wuerth et al.

Summary: This study successfully estimated hydraulic conductivities and biodegradation rate constants in a coal-tar contaminated aquifer using compound-specific isotope analysis and tracer-based groundwater dating. The results demonstrate the applicability of this method for in situ determination of hydraulic conductivities in aquifers without pumping contaminated groundwater.

A conceptual framework of groundwater flowpath and recharge in Ziban aquifer: south of Algeria

Nabil Chabour et al.

Summary: The Zyban aquifers in southern Algeria are important sources of groundwater, mainly found in limestone and dolomite. A study analyzing water samples for major ions and isotopes aimed to understand the flow path and replenishment areas, revealing the origin and mixture of water. The study area's complex structure and flow patterns are influenced by topography, hydrogeological units, and hydrodynamics.
